1st edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR to Jane Quinby, dated May 8, 1931. (Jane Quinby was the author of Beatrix Potter: A Biibliogrpahical Check list, published in 1954.) There is also a letter laid-in from Grant to Ms. Quinby, dated April 15, 1931, on his letterhead, which responds to her request for slides...he does not know where they are and he includes a drawing of a "funny man" to ease her disappointment, signed "Ever Yours, Gordon." Grant, 1875-1962, was an American painter and illustrator best known for his illustrations of marine subjects and sailing ships. 126p. frontis with tissue guard; b/w drawings throughout convey the day by day life aboard the old sailing ships; tan cloth / teal lettering; sm. quarto (10.5" tall); illus endpapers; signed on blank page after fep. Condition is VERY GOOD+ book / GOOD- jacket: book has lt. soiling to spine tail and along board edges; jacket is edgeworn with sm. chips and tears, a 1" closed tear to front cover, lt. rubbing at folds, tanning to spine, in protective mylar. A nice copy.
